While studying anatomy during medical school, I was having a hard time visualizing where all of the bones and ligaments were. Muscles, blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatics run over, under, and around all of these major structures. I didn't have access to a 3D plastic model while studying, so I just started making one out of paper.
I soon realized that it was actually really helpful and that the various parts of the pelvis were relatively flat, so a paper model was adequate. After the test, I perfected the design and made a really simple cut-out book. My anatomy professor who was quite impressed, so I put it on the internet. Soon, midwives and other students were buying the book.
Here we are, 20 years later. I'm now making the book free for download. Print it, color it, cut it out, and assemble it!
If you are a midwife or a doula, the basic pelvis design here is good enough to show your patient/client just how amazing the human pelvis is. If you are anatomy student, feel free to use different color yarn or string to wire blood vessels and nerves through the various orifices. Use tape to hold them in place. This will help you understand the 3D spacial positioning of the various parts of the pelvis.
